(Mallorca, 15 July 2023) – Mallorcans Ángel Candel and Fernando Salgado had a perfect day and took the lead in the Pro and Advanced categories respectively on the first day of the Wing Foil Spain Series.

The beach of Es Caló de Sant Antoni hosted once again, for the third consecutive year, the national wing foil fleet in what would be the second stop of the 2023 circuit.

Raising the Delta flag at a quarter to one, the sailors took to the race course in twelve knots to compete in a total of five races until the intensity of the wind dropped, forcing the race committee, led by Chief Race Officer Fátima Reyes, to end the day’s racing.

De camino de vuelta al Club Nàutic S’Arenal, Reyes comentaba lo siguiente acerca de las condiciones de viento que había durante las pruebas: “Hemos empezado con unos doce y trece nudos del 210, es decir, de componente sur-suroeste. Las tres primeras pruebas se ha mantenido con estas condiciones, subiendo momentáneamente a quince nudos. A partir de la cuarta prueba ha empezado a decaer y ya en la quinta prueba el anemómetro nos marcaba apenas ocho nudos y al ver que los foils apenas podían volar hemos decidido terminar.”

Estas cinco pruebas disputadas le han valido al jóven mallorquín Ángel Candel para demostrar su superioridad sobre sus compañeros y firmar una jornada perfecta con cinco primeros puestos. Candel declaraba contento por sus resultados: “El día ha sido genial, hemos podido hacer cinco mangas con muy buen viento que se ha mantenido hasta casi el final. El recorrido del campo de regatas ha sido muy divertido y muy dinámico y lo hemos disfrutado mucho todos, ha sido un buen día.”

With Candel giving no respite to his teammates, the excitement of the day came in the fight for second place between the Mallorcans, Bernat Tomás and the current leader of the general classification, Julián López. Both completed the first day of the WFSS with two second places and two third places, discarding from the score their worst results, a ninth place for Tomás and a sixth for López. Therefore, the two of them finish the first day in a tie on points pending the tie-breaker on the second and final day.

The Mallorcan Fernando Salgado dominates in the Advanced category.

Fernando Salgado extends the Mallorcan superiority also to the Advanced category by repeating Candel’s feat in the queen category, with five first places in the five races of the day.

Al llegar a la playa, Salgado comentaba:“Ha sido una regata bonita, con cuatro pruebas muy interesantes, salvo en la última del día llegué muy justito de viento. El nivel de mis compañeros es bastante alto y el hecho de haber conseguido ganar en todas las pruebas del día a mis sesenta años es increíble y me siento muy contento. Quiero aprovechar y dar las gracias a la organización de las WFSS, al chiringuito Es Caló y al CNA, ya que ha sido una primera jornada inmejorable y encima el día nos ha acompañado, por lo que no puedo estar más contento.”

After Salgado, Daniel Alarcón had four second places and a discarded third, which gave him provisional second place. On the other hand, the provisional third place in the Advanced category went to Leo Kleine, who finished the day with one second, three thirds and a DNC that could be discarded.
