El viento acudió puntual a su cita anual con la Copa del Rey MAPFRE La flota salió al agua con previsión de brisas medias a partir del mediodía's Cup regatta.

The wind was on time for its annual appointment with the Copa del Rey MAPFRE. The fleet took to the water with a forecast of medium breeze from midday, and the first start of the day took place a few minutes after midday. The intensity ranged from 10 to 15 knots, which allowed the six classes to return to the boxes of the Real Club Náutico de Palma with their homework done: three of the three scheduled starts for the Majorica ORC and two of the two for the ClubSwan monotypes.

The first leaders of the 41st Copa del Rey MAPFRE are: Palibex-Elena Nova(ESP) in Majorica ORC 1, Teatro Soho Caixabank (ESP) in Majorica ORC 2, Scugnizza (ITA) in Majorica ORC 3, Just the Job (GBR) in Majorica ORC 4, Moonlight (MON) in ClubSwan 50 and Pez de Abril (ESP) in ClubSwan 42.

Triple serving for the Majorica ORC
In Majorica ORC 1, the best of the day was Palibex-Elena Nova Javier Sanz (1+2+2), who leads Giovanni di Vincenzo’s Lisa R (2+3+1) by a minimum. The Aifos of the Spanish Navy, skippered by King Felipe, is fourth after adding a 3.5 (by tiebreaker with From Now On), a fourth and a third .

In Majorica ORC 2, the perfect day for the defending champions, the Soho Caixabank Theater put together by Javier Banderas from Malaga and skippered by Daniel Caves. After adding three victories out of three possible, the 2022 champion returned to port with no less than nine points ahead of his immediate rival, Pedro Gil’s Maverta (2+2+8).

In Majorica ORC 3, Italian Vincenzo de Blasio’s Scugnizza also started the defense of his 2022 title (1+1+2) in the lead. He was only surpassed by the Laplaza Assesors em> of Barcelona’s Alexandre Laplaza in the last of the day.

For its part, the fleet of Majorica ORC 4 returned to port with a tie between Just the Job of the British Scott Beattie (1+1+3) and Ybarra-Befesa by Sevillian Arturo Montes (2+2+1). Both maintained an intense duel throughout this opening day, only interrupted by Gonzalo Calvo’s Lassal in the last round.

Two out of two for the one-designs
The first day of the ClubSwan 50 ended in a draw between Moonlight Graeme Peterson’s and Hendrik Brandis’s Earlybird, who alternated in first and second position in the two races held. It is the best day of the Moonlight since its debut in the class in 2022. The Monegasque boat, fifth in the last Copa del Rey MAPFRE, has been reinforced with the New Zealander Cameron Appleton in tactics. For its part, the Earlybird is the most successful ClubSwan 50 in the Bay of Palma, where it has won three titles, and in this edition entrusts the tactics to Brazilian ace Robert Scheidt.

In class ClubSwan 42, the undisputed protagonist of this first day was José María Meseguer’s Pez de Abril, winner of the two sleeves disputed . The boat from Murcia, with the tactics of the Portuguese Olympic medalist Hugo Rocha, prevailed by just three seconds in the first test and managed to unravel in the second, in both cases ahead of the Italian Selene Halifax, who leads by two points ahead of the second day.

On land, the premiere of the village of the regatta on the terrace of the RCNP was performed by the music of DJ Alba Serano. The day ended with a Welcome Cocktail for all the participants at the Hotel Castillo Son Vida.
