The long match played yesterday against Serbian Laslo Djere, which he won after two hours and fifteen minutes (5-7, 7-6[1], 7-6[1]), together with his good performance at the ATP Stuttgart reaching the semi-finals, have taken their toll on the world No.45, who will now try to recover in time for the upcoming Wimbledon.

Kyrgios has aroused great expectation since his arrival at the Mallorca Country Club, mobilising crowds of fans as one of the main attractions in a luxury line-up for the only ATP event on grass that takes place in the south of Europe. His match against Djere generated the best crowd so far on Centre Court, which was treated to a thrilling battle.

Nick Kyrgios: I’m very sorry to have to withdraw from tonight’s match here in Mallorca. I’ve been playing a lot of big games lately and unfortunately I woke up with pain in my abdominal area. I visited the tournament doctor straight away and he advised me not to play tonight. I appreciate the Mallorca Championships very much but I will follow your advice because I don’t want to jeopardise my participation in Wimbledon next week.

I was really looking forward to tonight’s game, as I’ve loved being here. Mallorca is a beautiful island with very nice people.

I would like to thank Toni Nadal, Edwin Weindorfer, the incredible public and the whole organisation of the tournament for the great treatment received. I hope to be able to return to Mallorca next year.

Toni Nadal (Mallorca Championships Director): We were delighted to have Nick Kyrgios here at the Mallorca Championships this week. He has shown that, when he wants to, he is a great player. I wish him a speedy recovery and all the best for the rest of the season.

Edwin Weindorfer (CEO and founder of e|motion Group): We are very sorry to hear about Nick Kyrgios’ injury. We are very pleased to have enjoyed our events in Stuttgart and this one in Mallorca. We wish him all the best for the season and particularly for Wimbledon. We wish and hope to see you next year in Stuttgart as well as in Mallorca.

Javier Cerrato (Head of the medical services of the Mallorca Championships): Nick Kyrgios is suffering from left rectus abdominis discomfort due to the accumulation of matches in recent weeks and the strain of yesterday’s first round match. This will prevent him from returning to the court this afternoon against Roberto Bautista.
